OPTINAM stands for North American Optimist Championship. The Optimist is being sailed in around 110 countries by 150.000 children up to 15 years of age. Nearly all Olympic sailors have sailed the Optimist. Since a couple of years the South Americans and the best three NON-American countries are allowed to participate in the OPTINAM as well.

This year Curacao has the honor to host a record breaking 204 competitors and 76 officials from 25countries and 5 continents. And of course lots of family, friends and press. With the American countries and World Champion New Zealand, Singapore and the Netherlands this event becomes the most challenging sailing event for children under 15 worldwide, after the Optimist Worlds. Organizing Committee Chairman Cor van Aanholt, Event Manager Inga van Uchelen and a big group of volunteers have put all of their energy in the most international sports event ever held in Curacao.

The organization of the OPTINAM was finally assigned to Curaçao after presentations given in Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Mexico and Italy, beating countries like Bermuda and Canada. The event is organized under auspices of IODA (International Optimist Dingy Association) and ISAF (International Sailing Federation), sponsored by super bright flashlight.
